RYA/DTp SMALL CRAFT SEA SURVIVAL COURSES 2007
Run by contessa 26 sailor Chris Rose (Erin Rose, based at HCA Grimsby)
A one day course in the theory and practice of sea survival, led by a RYA/MSA Sea Survival Instructor. The use of emergency equipment, specifically liferafts and flares will be covered. It will provide a rare opportunity to learn and practice skills that will enhance knowledge, confidence and awareness in the important areas of personal, crew and boat safety. Course members will be awarded the RYA Small Craft Sea Survival Certificate upon successful completion of the course.
The course will be of interest and relevance to anyone involved in cruising, racing, flotilla sailing and other water sports in which a liferaft, distress flares and other emergency equipment are carried. This may also apply to family or other groups who sail or intend to sail together. Sail Training personnel, ISAF event racing crew and cruising rally crew are increasingly required to hold a RYA Sea Survival or RYA/ISAF Offshore Safety Certificate
(ISAF Course – 2 day course, inclusive of Sea Survival, also covering First Aid at Sea, Heavy Weather Sailing, Storm Sails, Meteorology, Fire Precautions, Damage Control & Repair, MOB).
The Sea Survival Course comprises a theory session involving discharge of a liferaft and access to a wide range of safety equipment including liferaft survival packs, EPIRBS and lifejackets. This is followed by the discharge of a range of live marine distress flares and a two-hour pool session* during which a liferaft will be fully deployed. Course members, wearing full wet weather gear and lifejackets will practice survival techniques including entry into management of and righting a raft from capsize.
A course handbook and all safety equipment are provided. Course members should use their own wet weather gear and lifejackets although these items can also be provided on request.
To apply for the courses or request further information please contact the above numbers.
* Please note
Although not involving continuous or distance swimming the pool session is very demanding in short bursts and does require a reasonable level of fitness and mobility. Course members should ensure they are sufficiently fit to participate.
